Damon's Room

Damon “Bub” Goga is an 11 year old boy from the Chenango Valley School District. In November of 2017, he was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a type of bone cancer, in his left tibia. Damon is receiving chemotherapy treatments at Golisano Children’s Hospital in Syracuse. To remove the tumor doctors had to perform a below knee amputation. He will complete treatments soon and begin the process of learning to use a prosthetic.

Through this tough time, “Bub” has maintained an amazing attitude. He remains upbeat and confident that he will soon be running with his friends, playing soccer, and getting back on the baseball field. But most of all he is looking forward to just being a kid.

The project coordinators: Linda Salomons, Beth Shumaker, and Molly Santa Croce are all mothers of past A Room to Heal recipients. They met for five months, planning and preparing to create a healing environment in Damon’s room, who also shares his bedroom with his older brother Derek. The bedroom, taking into space constraints, provides a comfortable space for two young men. ARTH volunteers removed the existing bunk beds, moved in two brand new twin beds frames and comfort mattresses with storage underneath. They also purchased new furniture to create a relaxed feel for Damon, who likes to play video games, and for Derek, who likes art and music. Healing elements include better sleep conditions (Mattress and window shades), textures such as furniture and carpeting, and a bed rail for easy maneuvering in and out of his bed.
