Brianna's Room
Brianna has sickle cell anemia, which causes her significant pain. When she experiences a “flare” she is in such pain that she can require a hospital stay where she can get IV-administered pain medication. She had been attending Buffalo State College but her illness forced her to take time out from her studies.
Brianna’s brother passed away the prior year. Her wish was to move into his old room -- a 2-room, finished attic space. But the space was dark, with paneling on the walls and a dark orange-brown carpet. There was no closet and very little furniture. What Brianna needed -- and what A Room to Heal provided -- was a bright, modern, and comfortable space that offers a calm retreat from the world.
Brianna beamed as she entered her new space. A framed photo of her beloved brother caught her eye first, as she took in the white walls, gray carpeting, a soft gray chaise lounge, patterned side chairs, a brand-new flat-screen TV, and desk area. The room was accented with bright teal table lamps and throw pillows and featured a mini fridge for cold drinks.
Brianna entered the bedroom space, where she exclaimed, “It looks like a hotel room!” Her new bedroom was showcased by a built-in cabinet that was painted white and displayed framed family photos and gold and teal accessories. Her new bed featured a gray velvet upholstered headboard and luxurious bed linens and pillows. Special touches such as a make-up mirror, new shelving and color-coordinated storage bins made the room complete.
Brianna’s family and friends were there as she got to see her new room for the first time, and were able to witness her bright, animated smile and excitement.
