Laurie Abess

Linda Salomons
A Room to Heal is the “brainchild” of two local mothers, Laurie Abess and Linda Salomons, who wanted to make a difference in the Binghamton, NY area. Both women felt passionate about the need for children affected by serious medical challenges to have a calming, peaceful, and uplifting environment in which to heal.
Their passion was inspired by Eric, Linda’s son, who was diagnosed at age four with childhood leukemia. Laurie, Linda’s close friend, felt helpless knowing how to support her. Together, they envisioned a way to bring healing and comfort to children like Eric and their families. A few years later, they launched an idea that has since touched thousands of lives — bringing hope, love, and healing through every project.
A kick-off event was held in December 2005, a fundraising luncheon to share the idea that would become A Room to Heal. Over 40 people attended, and from that luncheon, a board was created. In 2006, the organization became incorporated and obtained its 501(c)(3) nonprofit status.
What began as a small grassroots effort quickly grew as volunteers, local businesses, and community members joined in support. To date, A Room to Heal has completed over 150 healing projects for children, continuing the mission that began with two mothers and one powerful idea.
