Grady's Room

A Room to Heal received a referral in 2015 for five-year-old Grady, who was born with Trisomy 9 Mosaic and has severe disabilities. Trisomy 9 occurs when the 9th chromosome appears three times rather than twice. This usually results in a growth deficiency, failure to gain weight, low muscle mass and a delay in mental cognition. This makes it hard for Grady to live a typical life. After the home visit, it was determined that the existing addition the family planned to use for Grady’s room was unusable due to faulty foundation work. The ARTH project was on hold.
The Southern Tier Home Builders & Remodelers Association (STHBA) decided to undertake a community project and created a new addition with a bedroom and therapy area for Grady. STHBA secured donations of supplies, materials and labor from its membership and vendors, and were able to complete the project at no cost to Grady’s parents, Taylor and Leslie.
Once the addition was complete, A Room to Heal and Make-a-Wish stepped in to complete an accessible bedroom and therapy room where Grady can sleep, play, and learn. A Room to Heal decorated the room and Make-a-Wish provided therapy equipment and toys.
Grady’s room reveal was on March 3, 2017…which also happened to be his 6th birthday!
“I am so happy, that’s all I want for him is to be happy. Like any parent wants for their kid.” –Leslie
