Mia's Room
Mia is 16, she has Prader-Willi syndrome, autism, pica, and developmental delays. She spends most of her time in the living room and dining room, so that is where her healing space was created. The goal of the project was to make the space safe and more functional for her. The project team worked with Mia’s parents and case manager to determine what would be most helpful in keeping Mia safe and create a calming, inviting space.
Two volunteers worked hard to design secure gates for the kitchen entries. They built them from scratch because nothing available commercially fit Mia’s needs. they spent hours designing and building the gates. The result was incredibly functional, it solved the problems the family had with past gates they’ve tried, and they were also beautiful! The overhead lighting was replaced with fixtures that Mia wouldn't be able to pull on, the carpet was replaced with easy-to-clean flooring, and the team added a new chair and couch with storage and individual cushion covers to help with cleaning. Mia had a large wooden bench swing that she loved, but it was no longer safe and took up a lot of space in their home, it was replaced with a fantastic rocker that is low to the ground. The project team also provided the family with a projector to replace the tv.
Thank you to Lisa Wilson (for leading this project) and her team of volunteers: Stephen & Denise Orzelek, Deb and Rachel Sperano, Nick Kilmer, and Jim Wilson.
Thank you to Warehouse Carpet Outlet (for installing the flooring), N&M Building & Renovating (for the lighting changes), and Home Central (for the chair).
