Shaun's Room

Shaun is an incredible 13-year-old who received a life-saving heart transplant this May…on his 13th birthday! Just six weeks later, he returned home to find a dream bedroom makeover waiting for him.
His thoughtful sister generously gave up her larger bedroom so Shaun could have more space as he continues to recover over the next few months. Because he’s on immunosuppressants, our goal was to create a room that’s easy to keep clean, comfortable and supportive, and most of all, a fun and uplifting place to be.
Volunteers got to work removing wallpaper, pulling up carpeting, and prepping and painting the space. Endwell Rug installed a beautiful LVP floor, and one of our Room Dads, an electrician, “paid it forward” by installing a modern light fixture. More volunteers stepped in to hang curtains, install a custom closet system, assemble furniture, and make sure everything was ready for Shaun’s arrival.
Shaun is a huge Minecraft fan, so we made sure to incorporate that theme throughout the design. His best friend also let us know he’s a Rubik’s Cube whiz, so we gifted him a speed cube and a Soup Timmy cube stand. He now has plenty of space to display his favorite LEGO sets, too!
We’re so proud to have created this healing space for Shaun, he is an incredibly kind, resilient, and strong young man.
A heartfelt thank you to our amazing volunteer team: Jess, Kathy, Joe, Ann, Jen, Jack, Saychai, Liz, Mercedes, Karen, Billie, Eric, and Jeremy!
Over the years, we’ve had several Room Kids, volunteers, and even a board member, whose lives were forever changed thanks to organ donors. Stories like Shaun’s are powerful reminders of the profound impact one person can have on many. To learn more about organ donation and how you can register, visit https://donatelife.net.
