Eliana’s Room
Eliana is a beautiful 4 year old girl with a rare nerve degenerative disease called spinocerebellar ataxia. She has autism and dysphasia, among other afflictions. She is an energetic child with lots of spunk despite her challenges.
Eliana loves giraffes, sea turtles, and the color blue. She loves aquariums and lights that project on her ceiling so the project team chose a sea turtle theme for the design of the space. A new over-the-sill air conditioner helps cool the space. A custom made murphy-bed-style changing table was built and installed to make changing Eliana much easier now that she’s getting bigger. Tons of storage was added to organize Eliana’s medical supplies. Because Eliana falls frequesntly, floor mats help with safety. She loves to swing and bounce, so a not-so-infant swing was mounted to the ceiling. Sensory swings provide a controlled environment for sensory stimulation. The gentle movement of the swing can have a calming effect on a child, reducing the feeling of anxiety and stress.
